According to most state laws, proof of what a child is learning while being home schooled must be documented and available to view by the superintendent of that particular school district where the child resides. There are two items the superintendent will want to see, a home schooling curriculum and a daily log of activities. A home schooling curriculum is a basic outline of what subjects will be taught and how. It also gives a times line of the structure of a subject. This home schooling curriculum is subject to change, but should be fairly detailed as to what will be covered over the course of the semester. There are many books out there on how to create an effective curriculum.

For parents who homeschool, a curriculum helps keep everyone on track. It should note which chapters should be read at which times and when tests will be given. It should also list any reports assigned and essay due dates. It should be detailed and give a clear picture of what is expected of the student.

A daily is slightly different from a home schooling curriculum in that is what actually took place that day. Sometimes, if a discussion runs long or a test takes longer to complete, the time frame is off. A log will take care of this problem. Make sure everything is documented.

More than likely, the superintendent will not ask to see the log or the curriculum if the student does well in the yearly exam. But if there are problems, then he or she will want to know what the student is studying and if it needs to be faster or slowed down. Curriculums are based on past performance. Once a child has been homeschooled for a year or more, parents will gauge the child’s performance and make the next lesson plan to fit their speed of learning.
