Evaluating Performance in the Home Schooling Programs Environment

Evaluating performance in the home schooling programs environment can be a challenging endeavor for any parent that educates their children in this manner. Performance evaluation is normally done by the adult in charge of the homes chool curriculum. Generally, this is the child’s parent. However, there are many cases in which a child receives their education from another adult. This may include a grandparent, an aunt, an uncle, or even a sibling. If you are in a situation where you evaluate the performance of a child participating in a home school curriculum, this article is for you.

In most traditional home school classrooms, the grading system is quite different from those that are implemented as standard benchmarks in the public school system. Normally, in a public school system, students are graded based on numeric values. These grades that these students receive are used to track the overall productivity, effectiveness, and learning rate of the students across the nation. In a homeschool classroom, this information is often not governed as strictly. However, there are now many homeschool classrooms that are considered “public virtual schools”, and these children are graded on the same numeric scale as their peers in a traditional public school setting.

When evaluating performance in home schooling programs, it is imperative that you become familiar with the specific program that you are using to educate the child. While many may place a high emphasis on the actual grades that are received, most adults who provide an education to the children in the home are more concerned over a mastery of the subject matter, rather than a numeric point value. If you hold a concern about how your student is standing compared to others in the same age group, the public school system often carries a copy of the statistics related to these values. You can visit your local school board for a copy of this report.

It is often quite difficult to motivate children in the home schooling programs environment to accept the challenges of certain topics and subjects. For example, many children struggle in either the areas of English and Math. While the child may be receiving an education at home, the government still has standards and laws governing what a child must learn as a standard. Many children may attempt to find a way out of doing the subjects that they experience complications with, but you still must evaluate their performance. They must still master these subjects as appropriate for their grade level. In order to ensure that they reach their potential, it is important that you make the subject fun and entertaining for them.

With many home schooling families, grading is black and white. Tests are issued, and the child must take the test in order to determine a numeric score. In other home schooling families, the child may be required to perform certain tasks in order to receive a grade. This may include completing an essay on the topic of their choice for English and Writing. They may be required to cook a special dish for math and home life skills, or measure certain objects in and around the home for math. Each and every family that homeschools is different. Evaluating performance in the home school environment is a task that will be as different as the individuals who takes home schooling programs.
